Contact Lens descriptions
Toric Contacts- Soft contact lenses designed to correct astigmatism. Custom made for your prescription. May require several visits to achieve best fit.
Disposable Contacts- Lenses designed to be disposed daily, bi-weekly, monthly, or every two to three months. Risk of infection is lowered with disposable lenses, as long as manufacturers' wear time recommendations are not exceeded.
Colored Contacts- Soft contact lenses containing tint. Tint may be very light, meant simply to help find lens. Medium tints are meant to enhance natural eye color, but cannot change dark eye color to light eye color. Dark or opaque tints can create blue-eyed color over brown eyes.
Gas-Permeable Contacts- Hard contact lenses, highly durable. Smaller, thicker, and initially somewhat less comfortable than soft contact lenses - but comfort usually quite good after adaptation period. Give excellent vision - better vision than soft contacts and glasses, especially in patients with astigmatism. Fall out more easily, so are less desirable for sports and heavy physical activity.
Bifocal Contacts- Soft contacts which have both distance and near correction, to treat presbyopia. Success rate is unpredictable due to reduced contrast sensitivity, (especially noticeable at night), vision changing with blinking, and reduced quality of vision. These factors have limited popularity, but some still consider it worth a try.
Dry Weather Contacts- Soft lenses using special design and exotic materials to improve comfort in dry weather and in patients with lower tear production.
Bandage Contact Lenses- Soft contact lenses applied to treat corneal abrasions, and certain corneal diseases. When used for corneal diseases such as corneal dystrophies and erosions, they may be prescribed for many weeks of continuous use.
