Staar Toric IOL Implant: Clear Corneal Cataract Surgery and Correction of Astigmatism
Approximately 15 to 20 percent of patients who need cataract surgery have some degree of preexisting astigmatism. Astigmatism causes objects to be focused at two separate locations instead of at one focal point on the retina. The result is distorted vision.
STAAR Toric Foldable IOL
When a cataract is removed, a replacement lens is needed to restore focus to the eye. This implant is called an intraocular lens. The STAAR Toric intraocular lens not only restores focus, but can also correct or reduce preexisting astigmatism during cataract surgery. Before the STAAR Toric intraocular lens, preexisting astigmatism could only be corrected by making Limbal Relaxing Incisions into the cornea during surgery to change its curvature, or by using astigmatism correcting eyeglasses after surgery.
Why we use the Staar Toric Foldable IOL: The Art and Science of Transforming Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery and IOL insertion are faster and safer than ever before. However, preexisting astigmatism that is left uncorrected can reduce visual acuity after cataract surgery.
Unsurpassed vision can now be delivered in a single refractive cataract procedure. The Staar Toric IOL incorporates a special curvature (toric curve) into a foldable one-piece IOL that can be implanted through a 2.75 mm incision. The need for Limbal Relaxing Incisions or astigmatism correction in glasses is greatly reduced.
