Intacs for Keratoconus at Pabalan Eye Center

A new and exciting use of Intacs is in the treatment of Keratoconus.

Keratoconus is usually first treated with glasses, then with Keratoconus Contact Lenses. However, the corneal warping of Keratoconus can progress to the point that neither glasses nor contact lenses give adequate vision, or contact lenses will no longer stay on the eye.
Laser treatment is avoided in Keratoconus, because laser procedures work by removing corneal tissue, and the cornea in Keratoconus is already abnormally thin and weak. Before Intacs, Penetrating Keratoplasty (corneal transplantation) was the only remaining alternative once contact lenses did not work.

Now, Intacs offer a new option for the treatment of Keratoconus. This is the only technology which strengthens the cornea - Intacs can reinforce the thinning cornea by supporting the cornea from within.

Intacs are FDA approved to treat Keratoconus, and are being used with great success to stabilize the corneal warping of Keratoconus. In many cases, contact lenses can again be used, and in some cases, the vision improves enough to allow usable vision without contact lenses, thus delaying the need for much more complex and costly corneal transplantation.

No treatment is 100% effective, so Intacs do not always improve vision in Keratoconus. However, it is clear from clinical experience around the world that Intacs can restore usable vision in many cases.  One of the great advantages of Intacs is that if they don't produce the desired effect, they can be removed, and other treatments pursued.
